It has been hailed as the archetypal 20th Century American symphony. Its five movements, played without a break, are typical of Harris’ symphonic work; short musical motifs and recurring, driving rhythms push the piece on with real purpose. It’s also a very optimistic work, and with its colourful harmonies, one that’s very accessible.
