Strauss was always destined to put the horn front and centre in his music – his father, Franz was the leading player in late 19th Century Germany. His second concerto is probably the greatest written for the instrument in the 20th century. It’s fantastic – and extremely virtuosic. Check out the solo leaps at the very beginning, and the climax at the end. Composer: Richard Strauss Performers: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Performer: Richard Watkins (Horn) Conductor: Pierre-André Valade Recording date: 14 December 2013 Date of broadcast: 14 December 2013
