Vaughan Williams's 'Five Mystical Songs' sets four simple spiritual poems to direct and straightforward music. The first four movements are quiet, personal meditations in which the baritone soloist is supported by the accompanying choir. The fifth and final song, however, is loud and bombastic, praising the glory and majesty of God. One of Vaughan Williams's greatest achievements, the songs are widely performed and recorded. Composer: Ralph Vaughan Williams Performer: Jennifer Johnston (Mezzo) Performer: Alisdair Hogarth (Piano) Recording date: 24 March 2013 Date of broadcast: 02 July 2013
