The Ritual Dances appear at 4 key stages in the opera 'The Midsummer Marriage', and provide some of the most refreshing and exhilarating music Tippett ever wrote. They have since become one of Tippett’s most popular works. Each dance represents an animal chase. In the first 3, both characters continually transform themselves to escape and pursue. The final dance is an inferno, the dancer becoming a symbolic sacrifice.
