The overture to Leonard Bernstein's comic operetta 'Candide' was composed in 1956 and is based on Voltaire's satirical novel of the same name, published in 1759. Listen out for the interaction of the woodwind instruments. Conveying a childish energy, the music flits from one to another while repeating the same melodies.
