With this, Sibelius produced his most conventional symphony in the style dominant of the 19th Century. From the opening bars, this powerful music looks east to Russia, where a chilly arctic feel is represented through the long solos which capture the solitude and vastness of the wilderness. Hardly surprising as at the time Sibelius had been studying Russian composers. His respect for Tchaikovsky is evident in its tragic ending. Composer: Jean Sibelius Performer: BBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Sakari Oramo Recording date: 06 December 2017 Date of broadcast: 06 December 2017
