Symphony No. 3 in C major, Op 52

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

Sibelius’s first two symphonies were very romantic in style, with sweeping tunes and big orchestra climaxes. His 3rd uses far smaller forces and has a more introspective and concentrated feel. It’s also unusual by having only 3 movements, and some have suggested that they correspond to the birth, death and resurrection of Christ. With hymn-like passages for the orchestra in all 3 movements, and an optimistic feel to the last, there is a certainly religious feel to this most accessible work. Composer: Jean Sibelius Performers: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: John Storgårds Recording date: 24 October 2012 Date of broadcast: 24 October 2014
