After the horrors of WW1 many poets returned longing for the 'safety' of rural England. Shanks - badly injured in 1915 - published this poem in 1933. Gurney - also a victim of the war - adds his trademark melancholy music to a beautiful tale of a long-married couple's undiminished love.
