Stravinsky's ballet 'Petrushka' was composed in 1911 and this is the 1947 revised version for smaller orchestra. The story of Petrushka (known as Mr. Punch in the UK) revolves around three puppets brought to life. The music is colourful and vibrant and helped cement Stravinsky's reputation as a composer. Listen out for the 'Petrushka Chord' which introduces the main character, a combination of C and F sharp chords which create a harsh and dissonant sound. Composer: Igor Stravinsky Performer: BBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Jiří Bělohlávek Recording date: 27 July 2009 Date of broadcast: 27 July 2009
