(S)irato was written by Swiss composer and oboist Heinz Holliger in 1992. It's a chilling work; the opening bars are a slice of horror, then the interrupting staccato of the brass (very short and separate notes), the unpredictable percussion, the snake-like twisting strings and woodwind, all coming together in an unsettling way. Holliger pushes the orchestra to its darker limits, a good example that classical music is not always as soft on the ear as Mozart. Composer: Heinz Holliger Performers: BBC National Orchestra of Wales Conductor: Thierry Fischer Recording date: 04 August 2009 Date of broadcast: 04 August 2009
