In 1929 Shostakovich composed his first film score. He proved extremely adept at it, and by 1970 had composed 39 more. His music to 'The Gadfly' from 1955, is probably the best known. Its attractive music complements the swashbuckling story of the 19th Century Austrian soldier who dies a hero’s death.
