David Matthews has written a number of pieces inspired by the sea. 'A Vision of the Sea' was inspired by an unfinished poem by Shelley which describes a violent storm. The first main section suggests the gently moving waves, and is followed by a faster scherzo reflecting a blustery, choppy seascape. In the final section, the sea demonstrates its full power with a thunderous climax, before settling into stillness and a calm seascape.
