Britten and Peter Pears spent the first years of the war in America where they soon found themselves at the heart of New York culture. They often finished recitals with a British folksong specially arranged for the occasion. The Welsh tune 'The Ash Grove' is one such example. With its sweet melody and inspired accompaniment, Britten takes the simple tune and elevates it to higher levels. Composer: Benjamin Britten Performer: Ruby Hughes (Soprano) Performer: Julius Drake (Piano) Recording date: 14 November 2011 Date of broadcast: 30 December 2011
