A collection of five songs composed by Britten in 1947, all of the songs have the theme of traditional lullabies but there are also suggestions towards the anxieties of motherhood. The five songs have a variety of styles from the steady loping of 'Highland Ballou' to the soothingly slow 'Nurse's Song'.
