Nuevo tango, the new development in tango for which Piazzolla was largely responsible, pushed new instruments such as the saxophone and electric guitar into the traditional tango ensemble. In Spring, the (electric) guitar performs a prominent role, almost riffing with the bandoneon in numerous short duets. The music sometimes feels improvised but there are tuneful nostalgic melodies which come from it.
