Composed in the 1930s, 'Billy The Kid' is the first of Copland's three American Ballets. This was his deliberate (and successful) attempt to create orchestral music that was distinctly American. Following the story of the famous outlaw of the Wild West the music is in places large and unabashed but listen for the quieter moments that paint the American landscape in more detail. Composer: Aaron Copland Performers: BBC National Orchestra of Wales Conductor: Grant Llewellyn Recording date: 28 May 1999 Date of broadcast: 31 May 1999
