Mike Hoare was an adventurer and a soldier. His work as a mercenary took him to the Congo in the 1960s. He later led a failed coup in the Seychelles, and ended up in jail in South Africa. He was known to many as ‘Mad Mike’ as Tim Ecott, former BBC journalist who met him told Last Word.
