"I wanted to bring her fierceness to the screen": Harriet director Kasi Lemmons

Woman's Hour

Available for over a year

The life of Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery in the US in 1849 to become a leading abolitionist, is being celebrated in a new film. As a ‘conductor’ on the Underground Railroad she enabled hundreds of enslaved people to gain their freedom. British actress Cynthia Erivo plays her in Harriet, which is directed by Kasi Lemmons. Kasi spoke to Woman's Hour’s Jane Garvey about bringing Harriet’s story to the screen.
