Zemlinsky's String Quartet No. 1 op. 4 is considered one of the most important pre-Second Viennese School quartets. The opening movement is full of irregularities and syncopated rhythms, the second sees a simple folk melody move to a tumultuous gypsy dance, the third is broad and powerful while the finale is heroic and buoyant. Composer: Alexander Zemlinsky Performers: Escher String Quartet Recording date: 20 May 2012 Date of broadcast: 22 June 2012
