Written to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the July revolution in 1830, the work depicts a solemn funeral march, a funeral address to the fallen and finally a triumphal march composed as a hymn of praise to liberty. The assembled players caused havoc when they marched off stage during the final movement at the first performance.
