Butterworth's best known work is his song collection A Shropshire Lad. The subject matter is often gloomy and death-obsessed, written as it was in the shadow of the Second Boer War. At the same time it is permeated, like all of Butterworth's works, by the folk song and pastoral influences of the English countryside. Composer: George Butterworth Performers: BBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Sakari Oramo Recording date: 15 January 2016 Date of broadcast: 15 January 2016
