Lord Darling was Chancellor of the Exchequer on this weekend ten years ago when the merchant bank Lehman Brothers collapsed. That event, which came about after Darling refused to allow a bail out of the New York financiers, provided the first emblematic images of dismissed traders walking out of their building on Wall Street and being instructed not to talk to the press.
