Satvinder Rana

Available for over a year

Gay rights activists are celebrating in India after the Supreme Court ruled that gay sex is no longer a criminal offence. The court has also said discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a fundamental violation of rights. Public opinion in India's biggest cities has been in favour of scrapping the law, despite strong opposition among religious groups and in conservative rural communities. Rubina Jasani is an expert on South Asia politics at Manchester University, and gives her reaction in this interview with BBC presenter Satvinder Rana
