‘Mother of Gulags’

Heart and Soul

Available for over a year

The Solovetsky monastery or ‘Solovki’ gained notoriety for being the first and one of the most brutal concentration camps of the Soviet era. With the fall of communism a small number of monks were allowed to return to the ‘Mother of Gulags’ to reclaim the monastery. It’s since become a site of pilgrimage as well as a memorial to those who once died there. Natalia Golysheva speaks to Anna Yakovleva, a historian and guide about the Solovetsky archipelago. Produced and Presented by Natalia Golysheva
