The Long Listen: How to help children whose mothers are in prison

Afternoon Edition

Available for over a year

Criminologist Dr Shona Minson guest edits Afternoon Edition with presenter Nihal Arthanayake. Her question is: “How do we prevent children being punished for their mothers crimes?” It’s estimated that around 17,000 children in England and Wales are affected by their mother being in prison, according to charity the Howard League for Penal Reform. 95% are forced to leave their homes as a result, living with relatives or foster families. Sometimes there’s no childcare in place, meaning an emergency plan has to be implemented. This clip is from Afternoon Edition on 15 May 2018
