Vandals attack Silent Soliders

Breakfast on BBC Radio Surrey

Available for over a year

Vandals have wrecked at least four life-size silhouettes of soldiers put up around Surrey. One in Carshalton has been beheaded, another in Dorking has been bent in half. The Surrey branch of the Royal British Legion is erecting "Silent Soldiers" in a campaign to mark the end of the First World War. A spokesperson said it is "shocked and saddened" by the attacks. "The Silent Soldier installations honour the memory of the Armed Forces personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice and those who defend the freedom we enjoy. "Like all memorials they deserve to be treated with the utmost respect," the spokesperson added.
