Car park charges are set to start at Newlands Corner in early 2018. Surrey County Council is ready to spend £122,000 installing parking meters and refurbishing the toilets at the beauty spot near Guildford and is close to a deal with land owners, the Albury Estate. The council plans to allow 20 minutes of free parking then charge £1-an-hour up to a maximum of £4. But campaigners say registered commons like Newlands Corner should be free to access and that charges will deter poorer visitors.
