As the dairy industry continues to strive to produce a litre of milk as environmentally sustainably as possible, a trial in the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Hillsborough, has been using bovine pedometers and collars to measure how many times a cow chews. The research aims to study the nutritional balance in a cows diet, while the pedometers help to measure how many steps a cow takes or lies down. The pedometer can also help to determine if a cow is lame. Debbie McConnell is a researcher from AFBI and an expert in the Digital Dairy industry.
