The total weight of plastics ever produced is equivalent to one billion elephants. Scientists in the United States have calculated humanity has manufactured 8.3 billion tonnes of plastics since the 1950's. Experts warn new solutions are needed urgently. We speak to lead author Professor Roland Geyer who hopes his study will lead to a radical rethink of how we make, use, and dispose of plastics. US and Chinese officials have cancelled a press conference in which a $347 billion trade deficit was to be discussed.
