Oldham's new first team keeper is a 5-year-old

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

When 5 year old Oldham Athletic fan Thomas Young heard his side's goalkeeper Connor Ripley was about to head back to Middlesbrough at the end of his loan spell, he was understandably concerned about the team not having a specialist keeper. He wrote to the club offering to take his place - only for the chairman Simon Corney to write back inviting him to come and try out in goal before their game against Rochdale. Speaking to 5 live's Dotun Adebayo, Thomas said he expected to save the ball should he play in Saturday's game. Matthew, Thomas' father, said: "I absolutely can't believe it." Departing Oldham keeper Connor Ripley jokingly told Thomas: "I need that clean sheet for the record, so make sure you get it." This clip is originally from 5 Live Up All Night on 22 April
