Referee ‘misapplied the laws of the game’

Former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher says Keith Stroud’s controversial decision in the Newcastle United v Burton Albion game was ‘an unfortunate error’ which he will be ‘very, very upset about’. Matt Ritchie's first-half penalty was disallowed by Stroud because Dwight Gayle encroached in the penalty area. An indirect free-kick was then awarded to Burton, much to Newcastle's confusion and anger. Gallagher told 5 live’s Jonathan Overend that the penalty should have been retaken and that has been confirmed by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body which oversees refereeing, who issued a post-match statement about the penalty incident stating that the referee misapplied the law.
