Should the BBC World Service Use the Term ‘Alt-Right’?

Over to You

Available for over a year

The ‘Alt-Right’ is the name currently embraced by some white supremacists to refer to themselves and their ideology, which emphasizes preserving and protecting the white race in the United States in addition to, or over, other traditional conservative positions. The movement has been described as a mix of racism, white nationalism and populism. And, when media outlets around the world are sitting up and taking notice of the potential danger around the use of this term, we ask if the BBC World Service are doing the same. Aleem Maqbool, the BBC North America correspondent gives an insight into reporting on the movement, John Daniszewski from New York’s Associated Press underlines the guidelines he has written up for journalists across the pond and listener, Stephen Witham from Michigan tell us why he is concerned about the BBC World Service’s continued use of the term.
