Andrew Sachs death: 'Success came as a surprise to him'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

The actor and comedian Andrew Sachs, who was best known for playing Spanish waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 86. Sir Tony Robinson was a friend of Sachs, and told 5 live he was "very modest" and success "came as a surprise to him". He added: "He worked in radio for many years and in a way given how shy and retiring he was, it was a good form for him. His face wasn't shown, he could work a lot but he didn't have to be a celebrity then suddenly he was thrown into the limelight." "I know in the last four years of his like he was bedeviled with dementia and it's an aching sadness that he should have to suffer that. I will remember him with intense fondness." This clip is originally from 5 live Stephen Nolan programme on Thursday 2 December 2016
