EU-Turkey migrant deal 'is unworkable'

World at One

Available for over a year

The deal between the EU and Turkey over migrants is not workable, says former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt. Ms Thorning Schmidt, who is now chief executive of charity Save The Children, criticised the agreement where migrants arriving in Greece are to be sent back to Turkey if they do not apply for asylum or their claim is rejected. She said it had left many families stuck in limbo in Greece, which is clearing the Idomeni migrant camp near the Macedonian border. New, more formal camps for the migrants at Idomeni should be much better, she said, although there were still concerns over issues like sanitation. (Photo: A digger clears tents at the Idomeni camp.
