World War One At Home

Available for over a year

Haddington - EH41 4BZ Seven sons from the Cranston family went off to fight for King and country. Bob Dickson tells the remarkable story of what happened to this one family from Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland; a story which symbolises the sacrifices made by families across the country. Of the seven Cranston brothers who served in World War One: four died, two were seriously wounded and only one, the youngest, returned home physically unharmed. This one family’s experience of the Great War is representative of the sacrifice made by a whole generation of families across the country. The Cranston family from Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland sent seven sons off to the Front. This is the story of how the family’s sacrifice impacted on the sons, on their mother, Lizzie, and how the family fiddle, which travelled to the Frontline and survived, is now played throughout the Scottish Borders, sharing their story through music.
