The bizarre bond between Elvis and President Nixon

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Jerry Schilling was a long term aide of Elvis Presley. In December 1970 Presley asked Schilling to travel to Washington with him where he hoped to get a badge from the federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Schilling agreed to travel with him and in the events that followed the pair ended up in the Oval Office with President Richard Nixon. Schilling told Emma Barnett that Elvis and Nixon "hit it off against all odds" and believes that they were two people who bonded over their "lonely at the top individualism". This clip is originally from 5 live Hit List on Sunday 17 January 2015.
