Tony Bullimore remembers his ocean rescue

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

In January 1997, British sailor Tony Bullimore was rescued after being stranded in the Southern Ocean for more than five days. He had been taking part in the Vendée Globe single-handed around-the-world race when his boat capsized. Tony was feared to have drowned until his vessel was spotted by an Australian navy ship and rescuers made for the scene. After hearing voices outside the yacht, he made his escape. "I thought if I hang about, I could get up to the surface in 20 minutes and see the stern of the HMS Adelaide making its way back to Australia." This clip is originally from I Was There on 5 live Daily on Friday 8th January 2015.
