As part of a boost to arts, music and cultural broadcasting on the network, the World Service has brought a variety of new programming into its schedule. One programme that caught the global audience’s attention is The Cultural Frontline. Presented by Tina Daheley, the series takes an audio journey around the world in search of cultural stories that reflect the news headlines or offer reflection on certain themes. Many listeners have been sharing their thoughts on the series so far and which stories have stood out to them most. But isn’t there place for cultural stories of this kind in the regular World Service output? Rajan Datar speaks to series producer Ellie Bury about what this programme uniquely offers and whether more can be done to immerse listeners in cultural phenomenon across the world. And, why the recent documentary series Young, Geeky and Black offered hope and inspiration to listeners from vastly different communities.
