Obama Worked The Phones To Make Pacific Trade Deal Happen

World Business Report

Available for over a year

President Barack Obama has said that he personally worked the phones to build support in the closing negotiations of the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal. In an interview with our partner programme Marketplace the US public radio show - he said he made calls to prime ministers and chief executives to get the agreement on creating the world's largest free trade zone through. He still faces a gamble to get the deal through US congress. But he told Kai Ryssdal that he believes his hand is strong, and that if the United States doesn't take the lead in setting the rules of trade in the Pacific, then China will. . We also hear from the slums of Lima as the international monetary fund says inequality stifles economic growth. And Greenpeace say that seafood company John West is not fishing as sustainably as it said it would. Photo: President Obama is interviewed on Marketplace. Credit: WH photo/Pete Souza.
