'This is a question of European solidarity'

Today

Available for over a year

European leaders have agreed to relocate tens of thousands of migrants who have arrived in Italy and Greece. The European Council president, Donald Tusk, said they would be moved to other EU states over the next two years. "This is a question of European solidarity," said Peter Sutherland, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for International Migration and Development. "Why should Greece and Italy in particular take this unfair burden of responsibility for refugees who are escaping from persecution?" The conditions in Italian refugee centres were "reasonably good", he added - largely because of the amazing voluntary work of those trying hard to provide a reasonable response to human suffering.
