Jean Denney was 15 and living in Dalton-In-Furness during World War Two. Her dad and brother were in the Navy and so “it was such a relief”. Despite rationing she remembers that they were able to pull together a “good spread” for the celebrations which were held at the Lord Nelson pub in Dalton-In-Furness. There was plenty to drink. The army band came down to play and she fondly remembers dancing with the soldiers: “It was the first time I’d ever really danced with a man".
