John Hornsy’s Story

BBC Radio Northampton Special

Available for over a year

John Hornsy, 80, from Kingsthorpe, has lived in Northampton since he was 3-years-old and remembers war time in the town during his childhood. A bomb was dropped on Milne Road, in James’ End – it “left a crater big enough to fit a house” he said. There was talk that the bomb was heading for the old bus depot, which was turned into a plane repair warehouse for the war. On VE Day, John was 10-years-old. There was a big marquee put up on Wheatfield Road. He lived round the corner from there so went to the party where he indulged in pies, cakes, singing and dancing. Image: VE Day celebrations
