Obesity and malnutrition may not at first thought have much in common yet as Katy Watson in Mexico City discovers the two are both part of a similar problem – one which presents very different challenges. Mexico has the highest rates of child obesity in the world and the economy is struggling to cope with the problems which being seriously overweight can bring. To explain the links between this health crisis and the economic strain it brings is Hugh Pym, the BBC’s Health Editor. While Katy Watson visits Erika Strand, Chief of Social Policy for UNICEF Mexico, Dr Abelardo Avila Curiel, an obesity specialist at the National Institute for Nutrition in Mexico City, and Priscila Juarez Ramos a social worker running a project focusing on child nutrition. Plus, the BBC’s Cindy Sui in Taipai explains how the Taiwanese government has tackled soaring levels of obesity in the region head on.
