Neil MacGregor: British Museum director stepping down

The man credited with transforming the image, and the popularity, of the British Museum has announced he's resigning as its director. Since taking over in 2002, Neil MacGregor led a programme of re-building and re-branding that made the museum one of the world's most visited tourist attractions. He said working there had been "the greatest privilege" of his professional life but that, at 68, he no longer wanted to work full-time. Instead, he'll advise museums in Germany and India, and work on a new series for BBC Radio 4 Speaking about a suitable replacement, Sir Richard Lambert, Chairman of British Museum, said "we will be looking for people who have intellectual credibility and a vision of what this place can be".
