Are bagpipes and Nessie the best way to promote Scotland?

Morning Call

Available for over a year

Kilted bagpipers in front of the Forth Road Bridge, Arbroath smokies and ceilidh dancers have become the first representations of Scotland to greet visitors to the country, as part of a new quarter-million pound advertising drive. Pictures depicting Scotch whisky, seafood and a community windfarm are also among 10 images to be used in a bid to promote brand Scotland to people from around the globe. One advertising expert criticised an over-reliance on traditional Scottish imagery such as kilts and bagpipes. Meanwhile in a separate £2 million campaign by Visit Britain, The Loch Ness Monster is to take centre stage, promoting the local area to foreign visitors. The advertising push will be targeted at key overseas markets, with the aim of increasing the number of international tourists to the area by 50,000 over the next four years. Louise asks: Are bagpipes and Nessie the best way to promote Scotland?
