Christophe Bassons: Lance Armstrong was alone, badly dressed and unhappy
5 Live In ShortAvailable for over a year
Former cyclist Christophe Bassons said that Lance Armstrong told him “he didn’t regret doping, because if he was to go back to the same time, the same culture, he'd have done it again.” In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport Editor Dan Roan, Armstrong said "If you take me back to 1995, when doping was completely pervasive, I would probably do it again." Christophe Bassons was bullied off the 1999 Tour de France by Armstrong for talking about doping at the Peloton. “When I saw him last year, he was alone, he was badly dressed, he drank, he avoided eye contact... he didn't seem happy... he wasn't happy.” said Bassons. “He said what he did regret was not seeing any difference between when he was on the bike and when he was off it. When he was on the bike, he treated it like war - he took on everyone…but when he got off the bike, he was the same.” “He could be as brutal off the bike as on it - and that was his main regret.” This clip is from 5 live Sport on Monday 26th January 2015
