Ched Evans: PFA's Gordon Taylor on failed Oldham deal

PFA Chairman Gordon Taylor had risked controversy by appearing to compare the Ched Evans case with the Hillsborough tragedy. In an interview with the BBC's David Ornstein Taylor said of Evans, who maintains his innocence despite being convicted of rape: "He wouldn't have been the first person to be found guilty, maintained their innocence and been proved right." "We know what happened with Hillsborough," Taylor said. "It's now unravelling and very different to how it was portrayed at the time - indeed by the police at the time." Oldham withdrew from any deal on Thursday after days of deliberations. Evans was jailed in April 2012 for raping a woman, 19, at a north Wales hotel. Taylor said people's opinions may change now Evans, in a statement released on Thursday, had apologised "for the effects" of his actions in 2011 that led to his rape conviction - "not least [on] the woman concerned".
