Malawi Land Grabs

Business Daily

Available for over a year

Are Malawian smallholder farmers suffering land seizures at the hands of big business? We look at claims that Malawian smallholders have suffered land seizures in the country. They claim plots have been taken from them by force for the sake of rich sugar interests. What is worse, say campaigners, is that seizures have been supported by European aid money. Ed Butler speaks to those who have lost their land plus the country’s Agriculture Minister Dr Alan Chiyembikeza. But Jenny Brown from the EU’s office in the capital Lilongwe says they believe they have improved the lives of smallholder farmers.
