Vine in 1914: The Falklands

Jeremy Vine

Available for over a year

The Falkland Islands came to the attention of the British public in 1982, during a conflict with Argentina. But in 1914, the Islands were being used as a strategic base for the British Navy, offering them easy access to the South Atlantic to the east, and the South Pacific to the west. On 8 December 1914, the British Navy defeated their German counterparts in a decisive battle here, largely thanks to two British battle cruisers, HMS Invincible and HMS Inflexible.
