St Malachy's Church, Belfast: A Rare Memorial to Catholic Soldiers

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

St Malachy's Church in the heart of Belfast has been a focal point for the city's Catholic community for over 150 years. This imposing Victorian building rises like a castle above the packed streets that surround it. One of the lesser known aspects of St Malachy's is that it contains a memorial plaque for soldiers lost in World War One. This is unusual in Catholic churches. While thousands of Catholic soldiers fought in the war, many Catholics were keen during and after the conflict to break from Britain - thus making the commemoration of men who joined the British Army a contentious subject. Location: St Malachy's Church, Belfast, BT2 8EN
